Poldaw Riser Pipe System
Reducing corrosion while improving water quality and system reliability of India Mark II handpumps
Description:
The Poldaw Riser Pipe System is an upgrade to the India Mk2 handpump. It uses heavy-duty uPVC pipes and innovative design features to address two key problems: corrosion of galvanised iron riser pipes in aggressive groundwater, and the need to remove all riser pipes to service the pump cylinder. Key advantages of the Poldaw system are:
Improved reliability and reduced lifetime costs.
Repairs and maintenance are quicker and easier to carry out.
Improved water quality due to lower iron levels.
WaterAid and Poldaw Designs Ltd have been field-testing the Poldaw Riser Pipe System in Uganda since 2019. In 2025, the Appropriate Technology Centre (ATC) carried out an independent evaluation using the Technology Applicability Framework, and the system has now been approved by ATC and the Ministry of Water and Environment for scale-up in the country.
