Designing water supply and sanitation projects to meet demand in rural and peri-urban communities
Book 1. Concept, principles and practice
Description:
Who should read this booklet?
This book has been specifically written for practitioners responsible for implementing water supply and sanitation projects in rural and peri-urban areas. Practitioners include engineers and technical staff, social facilitators, financial and gender specialists and project managers, with different roles and responsibilities within the project framework. In order to be able to use 'demand', it is essential that individuals work as in a multidisciplinary team -together with the communities involved. The concept of meeting demand does not belong to any particular profession.
How to use this booklet?
The objective of this book is to develop an understanding of what is a fairly complex issue. As far as possible, jargon has been avoided. The glossary helps explain some of the terminology used. The information provided in Part II also includes a number of practical tools and checklists. These can be extracted and adapted to enhance an existing strategy, taking into account the local situation and the capacity available.
