Stop the Rot Handpump Corrosion Survey 2025 – Results & Reflections

Description:

Under the auspices of Stop the Rot an online survey was conducted in October and November 2025. It set out to capture ongoing experiences with handpumps, focusing on iron corrosion, often referred to as “the red water” problem. High levels of iron in the water coming out of a handpump can require pumping for some time until the water becomes clear. High levels of iron can result in the rejection of the source by users, and/or can lead to premature failure of the supply itself. This survey built on previous RWSN Handpump Surveys published in 2013 and 2021 which examined a broader range of issues.
