Summary
This is a four-part webinar series exploring the innovations, policies, institutions, capacities and financial mechanisms that enable rural WASH services to scale and sustain.
Rural water and sanitation systems often work well on paper but struggle to hold up over time — services stall, institutions lack capacity, or financing dries up before solutions can scale. This series looks at what actually makes rural WASH services durable: the enabling environment of policies, institutions, capacities, and financing that lets good ideas take root and last.
The series is organized by the Rural WASH Community of Practice (CoP) of Multilateral Development Banks — bringing together the African Development Bank (AfDB/AWF), the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the World Bank, and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) — with technical facilitation by RWSN/Skat Foundation. It builds on webinars and exchanges the CoP ran in 2023 and 2024, and feeds into a broader Call to Action on rural water and sanitation that the CoP is developing with MDBs and their national partners.
Each of the four sessions takes on one focus area, drawing on cases from Africa, Latin America, and Asia to unpack what helped an approach scale, get institutionalized, or become sustainable — and what MDBs can do to support that:
- Innovations in Rural Water Supply — new technologies, digital tools, and community-driven approaches that improve service quality and monitoring
- Financing and Incentives — innovative financing mechanisms, performance-based incentives, and investment models for rural services
- Capacities and Institutions — strengthening and professionalizing rural service providers and the institutions around them
- Multisectoral and Territorial Approaches — coordinating across sectors and levels of government, including resilience to climate risks
