The “Northern Bahr el Ghazal Framework and Handbook for Operation and Maintenance of Rural Water Supplies” sets out how to ensure that rural and urban dwellers benefit from affordable drinking water ser-vices that are effectively managed, protected and maintained. The Framework and Handbook sets out common procedures and provides practical guidance for the planning & implementation of water supply improvements in Northern Bahr el Ghazal (NBeG) state. These proce-dures are to be adhered to by all government and non-government agencies striving to increase or sustain drinking water supply services in NBeG state through boreholes fitted with handpumps.

Decision-makers as well as practitioners in the water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) sector are facing serious challenges to keep existing WASH infrastructure in operation or to ensure provision of lasting and adequate WASH services. In many countries there are no tested procedures for assessing sustainability and scalability of new or existing technologies for providing adequate and lasting WASH services in a specific context.

The TAF was field tested on 13 WASH technologies in three countries: Burkina Faso, Ghana, and Uganda. This paper presents the findings from the testing of the TAF and highlights potentials and limits of its applicability
for assessing the sustainable application and scalability of WASH technologies.
Relevant documents on the methodology, the testing as well as case studies and manuals are accessible in the public domain through www.washtechnologies.net.

Research has shown that sustainability of rural water infrastructure in developing countries is largely affected by the dynamic and systemic interactions of technical, social, financial, institutional, and environmental factors that can lead to premature water system failure. This research employs system dynamics modeling, which uses feedback mechanisms to understand how these factors interact dynamically to influence long-term rural water system functionality (i.e., sustainability). To do this, the research first identified and aggregated key factors from literature, then asked water sector experts to indicate the polarity and strength between factors through Delphi and cross impact survey questionnaires, and finally used system dynamics modeling to identify and prioritize feedback mechanisms.

The construction of the lighter duty, simple hand operated drilling rig has been described in another manual and was designed for drilling shallow tube wells in softer soil formations, which occur in some areas of Zimbabwe. Currently the drilling stems extend to a maximum of 12m. Staff members of the Ministry of Health and Child Welfare are familiar with local shallow ground water conditions in Zimbabwe. A depth of 12m is suitable for the use of this simple rig in combination with simple water raising devices like the “Bailer-Bucket” Pump and Blair Pump.
This manual describes the test drilling of a tube-well in Epworth, near Harare, Zimbabwe and the construction and fitting of a PVC casing and filter mechanism. It also describes the construction of a simple “Bailer-Bucket” pump and the head works at the head of the tube well. Of particular significance is the part played by the family itself by making the water raising device – a tubular bucket fitted with non-return valve and handle. The design of the “pump” is very simple and easily made within the home. The chances of continued operation and maintenance are this considerably improved.

The risk of disasters is high throughout Central America. In Nicaragua, multiple natural hazards (earthquakes, tsunami, hurricanes, tropical storms, drought, landslides) combine with severe levels of socioeconomic
vulnerability, placing the country near the top of all international lists of countries with high disaster risk. Nicaragua is ranked 4th in the Climate risk index published by German watch in 2015.

Multiple global, national, and local factors augment the hazards faced by water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) services and increase their vulnerability. Intense tropical storms and hurricanes are affecting regularly the water systems infrastructure. More frequent and less predictable droughts and intense deforestation have deprived the Nicaraguan dry zone of the water needed for human consumption and agricultural production over prolonged periods.

When service providers succeed in raising considerable sums or even recovering full life-cycle costs associated with ongoing water service delivery through tariffs and user fees they are often faced with a different sort of challenge: managing sizeable cash reserves that are intended to be used for future capital maintenance expenses. Questionable long-term reliability of local financial institutions can lead to investment in diversified assets (e.g. insurance systems, real estate, spare parts, and even livestock). In addition, pressure to use portions of cash reserves in ways that are thought to be more productive, such as in system upgrades or expansion, can lead to funds being used sooner than originally intended. Although recent efforts by IRC, RWSN and others have helped to identify approaches and trends such as these, further discussion is needed to clarify best practices as well as any associated strengths and weaknesses.

Technological advances over the past decade have made solar water pumping a viable option for potable water service delivery in rural settings. Solar pumping is an especially attractive alternative when poor groundwater quality or high population density and growth limit the applicability of boreholes fitted with handpumps. However, globally-accessible resources that specifically speak to the various technological, financial, social, environmental, institutional, and operational elements of sustainable solar pumping designs are limited. This workshop provides participants with an opportunity to explore various aspects of holistic design of solar pumping systems through guided group discussion.

In an on-going effort to improve the quality of the service provided by the Rural Water Supply Network and the Secretariat, an online survey was launched in July and kept open for four weeks. The survey was publicised through Dgroups, LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook and via RWSN steering committee member organisations. over 600 complete and partial responses were logged by the SurveyMonkey software, which is roughly 10% of membership (though non-members also responded), however the actual number completing all the questions in the survey was 329 - similar to 2014

This document summarises the responses and aggregates the answers from the three languages offered: English, French and Spanish.

The Secretariat would like to thank everyone who took the time to participate in this survey.

Private domestic wells are not subject to the testing requirements of the Safe Drinking Water Act and are susceptible to contamination by natural and anthropogenic contaminants. For public health and planning purposes, the locations of high density of private domestic well (PDW) use need to be determined. A key resource is the 1990 U.S. Census where the source of water was a survey question, which led to a nationwide estimate of PDW usage. In this paper, methods are developed to estimate the areal density of PDW use in later years using readily accessible data including the 1990 census results. Because of abundant data on PDW locations and public water supplies, Oklahoma was used for a pilot project. Well logs reported to the Oklahoma Water Resources Board and the addition of housing units provide the means to update the 1990 census estimates. Census results and housing unit data are available on the county, census tract, and census block group level. PWD density estimates were consistent among these scales, as were estimates based on wells added and net housing units. The completeness of reported well logs was tested by counts from neighborhoods with known reliance on PDWs. The results showed that a significant undercounting of logs exists, and the small scale of subdivisions relative to even census block groups causes the method estimates to be lower than subdivision PDW densities. The estimates, however, indicate locations where high densities of PDWs are expected.

Field Study Investigating the Potential of Water Quality Testing to Predict Corrosion in Boreholes in Northern Uganda

Water sources are often abandoned by communities for two reasons: (1) the aesthetics of water quality that affects user acceptability and (2) the breakdown of pump parts that prohibits use of the borehole. Both can be related to the aggressiveness of water and both are important. Electroconductivity and pH and indices can indicate the potential of galvanic corrosion and electrochemical corrosion, respectively. Electrochemical corrosion contributes most to the high levels of iron from boreholes. The purpose of this study was to investigate the efficacy of pH strips in predicting groundwater pH and aggressiveness, compare the reliability of three different pH test strips to a Hanna pH probe, determine the origin of iron measured in boreholes, and make relevant recommendations.

Having reached the ripe age of 72 I have entered a stage in one’s life when people normally look backwards rather than forwards. But the retirement age, as it is sometimes called, allows a person to take up interests that may have been side-lined for years. It is an era which provides the possibility to take up a new and refreshed life style, which is as busy as one choses. I have now entered that era.

But my home and garden have been the birthplace of many developments which have entered the public domain. And the garden is littered with what many would call junk or at best aging demonstrations! I call it treasure. It serves to remind me of the supreme effort one placed, over the years, to develop many things which, in some cases, are now common place in certain parts of the world.

The potential of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) services in improving service delivery is well recognised. In the water sector, there has been a growing interest in supporting the sustainability of services in recent years. The sector has also witnessed an increase in ICT initiatives, including those that aim to improve and sustain water services. While there are a number of reviews that document different water sector ICT initiatives, the existing literature does not systematically consider the individual initiatives’ success or failure. The objective of this research is therefore to better understand the factors that facilitate and inhibit the success of ICT-based reporting to improve rural water supply sustainability.
