Hand Drilling in Nigeria: Why kill an ant with a sledgehammer? RWSN Field Note 2009-1

Author: ADEKILE, D. & OLABODE, O.
Year of Publishing: 2009
Publisher: RWSN/UNICEF

This field note gives individual householders, farmers, communities,
institutions and policy-makers information on hand drilling in Nigeria. It provides a basic understanding of affordable drilling technologies for Nigeria and beyond. Costs, limitations and risks associated with hand drilled wells are also described in order to assist informed decision-making at all levels.
With simple equipment which is locally available, hand drilling has the potential to provide low cost water supplies. However it only works where the formation is not too hard and the depth to the aquifer is not very great. The cost of the hand drilled boreholes in Lagos, Kano, Niger and Rivers States is about a third of machine drilled holes.

Manual Drilling Techniques

When a borehole is drilled, different types of sediment and rock layers can be encountered. To drill through all these different layers a range of manual drilling techniques have been developed and are used around the globe. In each case the drilling technique must (a) break or cut the layers, (b) remove the cut material from the hole, and (c) if necessary provide support to the walls of the hole, to prevent collapse during drilling.

Private Sector Perspective, North Sudan Paper presented at the National Workshop on Cost-Effective Boreholes, November 2009

It is estimated that in Sudan there is a need for 10.000-20.000 boreholes, as is the case in many African countries. Some studies shows that almost an average of 1000.000 Boreholes is needed to reach full coverage in Africa, if the idea of encouraging cost effectiveness of borehole water supplies to reduce the average cost by 10%, then a saving of approx 1 Billion will increase the coverage by 10 percent.

UNICEF has been supporting the Federal Government of Nigeria in water supply and sanitation in the rural areas in all the 36 states of the country since 1999. Most of the water supply is through the provision of boreholes. UNICEF Nigeria commissioned the Study of Public and Private Borehole Drilling in Nigeria to evaluate the factors affecting the cost of drilling in the country and determine how to achieve more cost effective borehole provision.
